AART-PD welcomes members from all backgrounds (including clinical, academic, lived or living experience) who are working in paid or unpaid roles in the mental health system, research, policy, or advocacy related to personality disorder to achieve positive and constructive change.

Headshot Sathya

Sathya Rao

Melbourne, Australia

Sathya is the Executive Clinical Director of Spectrum, statewide specialist service for personality disorder and complex trauma, Victoria, Australia. He is a psychiatrist and holds an adjunct clinical associate professor position at Monash University. Sathya conducts clinical and translational research and has published research papers, book chapters, and co-authored books on borderline personality disorder. He treats people who experience complex personality disorder and provides second opinions and secondary consultations for complex clinical conditions associated with personality disorder.

 

Sathya has taught clinicians across Australia for decades. He was the head of the psychiatry training program of Victoria for the RANZCP. Sathya was the recipient of the 2020 Meritorious Award of the Victorian Branch of RANZCP. In recognition of his contributions to psychiatry, Sathya received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) (General Division) in June 2022.

Rita Brown worked for nearly for 40 years as a pharmacist before embracing a career change to work in mental health and advocate for people impacted by BPD.

Rita is currently the Associate Director Lived Experience Workforce and Advocacy for Spectrum where she draws on her lived experience as a ‘carer’ supporting other family members living with BPD to advocate for the rights and needs of families and friends within Spectrum, other services and the wider community. In line with the recommendations of the Victorian Royal Commission into Mental Health she is a passionate advocate on embedding the lived experience workforce into every aspect of Spectrum’s work . She has contributed to book chapters: research articles and regularly presents to diverse audiences and contributes to state and national consultations and submissions.

She is also a volunteer, founding board member and current President of the Australian BPD Foundation. The foundation is a volunteer led and run national charity that advocates for systemic change (state and federally) to enable a positive culture that supports the recovery and wellbeing of people with who have complex emotional needs, often associated with a diagnosis of ‘personality disorder’ and their families/carers. She is the lived experience (carer) board member for AART-PD (Australian Association for the Research and Treatment of Personality Disorders) and is a member of the ISSPD (international Society for the Study of Personality Disorder) lived experience advisory committee.

Martin Sellbom

Martin Sellbom is a Professor in the School of Psychological Sciences at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2007 from Kent State University (USA). His research focuses on personality disorders, contemporary psychopathology models, and personality assessment with the MMPI instruments. Professor Sellbom’s work has been featured in over 300 publications that includes four books. He has won several awards, including the American Psychological Foundation’s Theodore Millon mid-career award for advancing personality science, American Psychology-Law Society’s Saleem Shah Award and Society for Personality Assessment’s Samuel and Anne Beck Award for early career achievement. Professor Sellbom serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Personality Assessment. For his clinical practice, he specializes in forensic psychological evaluations.

A/Prof Jillian Broadbear leads the Personality Disorder and Complex Trauma Research and Innovation Centre at Spectrum, in Melbourne, Australia. Spectrum is a national Centre of Excellence for Treatment, Training, and Research into personality disorder and complex trauma. Jillian was awarded a PhD in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan and has been working in the personality disorder field for 12 years. Her work includes epidemiological studies, treatment evaluation, lived-experience qualitative studies, and translating outcomes to promote best-evidence approaches in diagnosing, treating, educating and supporting consumers, carers, and the clinical workforce.

Zonia is an Occupational Therapist and manager in inpatient and community-based services, including high secure units in South Africa, Victoria, and Queensland. She holds a diploma in vocational rehabilitation, a master’s degree in research, and has undergone specialised training as a Dialectical Behaviour Therapist. Additionally, she is certified as an Informatics Analyst.  Her research focuses on group therapy, with a strong commitment to enhancing psychological interventions for public health clients, particularly those with Personality Disorders. Zonia’s leadership and vision are dedicated to advancing mental health services, ensuring that individuals receive the highest quality of support and care, regardless of their location.

In her current role as the Director of Therapies for Metro North Mental Health within Queensland Health, Zonia’s expertise spans change management, implementation science, and mental health psychological care. She is deeply committed to clinical improvement and remains at the forefront of delivering evidence-based care. Passionate about innovation, Zonia actively implements solutions such as virtual care to empower consumers on their recovery journeys, striving to create a more accessible and effective mental health landscape.

Dr Nicholas Day is a Clinical Psychologist and lecturer within the School of Psychology at the University of Wollongong. He has a particular research focus on assessment and treatment of personality disorders, with a published focus on narcissistic and borderline personality disorder. He is active in clinical work, practicing evidence based psychodynamic psychotherapy for treatment of personality disorders and consults widely to promote effective clinical practice for effective treatment of complex mental health conditions throughout the health service. Previously he was a postdoctoral research fellow at Project Air Strategy within the University of Wollongong, a group focused on evaluating and promoting effective and compassionate assessment, diagnosis and treatment for personality disorders.
